ABSTRACT

Polymorphisms of Alu insertions are vital and beneficial tools in studying genetic behavior of populations and geographic ancestry analysis. We developed a set of 12 molecular genetic markers for identification of the Emirati (United Arab Emirates) and the Pakistani population based on polymorphic Alu insertions. Allele frequencies were determined for 120 Emirati and 50 Pakistani unrelated, genetically distant nationals considering 12 loci on 12 chromosomes (11 autosomes and X/Y chromosomes). The allele frequencies for the 12 loci showed variations, 4 loci with distinct and unique pattern among the UAE individuals and 5 loci among the Pakistani populations. Considering the frequencies of the studied Alu-insertions, the Pakistani population revealed higher variation than the UAE population for the 12 loci. The obtained data of Alu insertion polymorphisms can be used to differentiate these two populations from other human populations; for gender identification and missing person identification in each and among the two populations.

Keywords: Alu insertions polymorphism, UAE population, Pakistani population, autosomal and X/Y chromosome, forensic study.
