Abstract

COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF THE ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF MORINDA CITRIFOLIA WHEN USED AS AN INTRACANAL MEDICAMENT WITH AND WITHOUT CHITOSAN AND PROPYLENE GLYCOL ON E.FAECALIS

ABSTRACT

AIM: Comparative evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of Morinda citrifolia when used as an intracanal medicament with and without chitosan and propylene glycol on E.faecalis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the in vitro effectiveness of Morinda citrifolia with calcium hydroxide when used as an intracanal medicament in endodontically instrumented teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated using sterilized Dentin discs of 4mm thickness and 3-5mm diameter. Complete dentin disc were placed in Petri dish containing Mueller-Hinton agar containing colonies of E.faecalis. Agar diffusion test was used for the measurement of antimicrobial activity of the test materials. The antibacterial activity of the sample was checked by measuring the diameter of zone of inhibition in two directions on the agar plate. Data was analysed using students paired t test and ANOVA. RESULTS: Morinda citrifolia in combination with chitosan and propylene glycols a vehicle showed the maximum zone of inhibition followed by Morinda citrifolia with propylene glycol as a vehicle followed by Morinda citrifolia with saline as a vehicle. Calcium hydroxide and saline did not show a Zone of Inhibition against E.feacalis.
