Abstract

NATURAL WATER HABITAT IS BEST FOR LEECH FARMING: AN OBSERVATIONAL PILOT STUDY

Dr. Mahesh Kumar*, **Dr. Manju Rani

ABSTRACT

The leech therapy is therapeutic application of Leeches in various human diseases. The treatment of diseases by Jalauka (leeches) is mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic classics and is popular treatment method in Ayurveda till now. The Jalauka (Leech, Genus Hirudinaria) are lower animal belonging to phylum Annelida of animal kingdom. Now the practice of Leech therapy increasing day by day by clinician due to getting their successful outcome. For that reason the demand of leeches also increasing continuously. The Leeches have many variety and their population are too much in fresh water, ponds, lakes etc. Few of them may be poisonous and few are not suitable for clinical practice. So the copious availability of medicinal Leeches at practice
site still create a challenge in front of Ayurvedic clinician. Also there is no such known vendor or Leech farming centre in country which give surety, reliability and timely easier availability of Leeches for every clinician. As per knowledge there is no any such type of rewarded and documented work or established centre have been noticed. So to make ensure the continuity of Leech practice, the liability also goes to Ayurvedic clinician to work in this Ayurvedic emerging field and try to establish Leech farming centre. If such Leech farming centre became practical to providing Leeches frequently, the teaching, training, research and patient care will definitely expand. Keeping these thing as a big project in future, an initial work has been planned with small action at our own institute. The aim and objective of the study is to know whether the Leeches can remain survive in natural water, in mixed purified water & in RO water which have different pH and TDS values etc. Also to standardise the optimal condition of water for medicinal Leech cultivation and observation on breeding. Seeing basic satisfactory result in observational pilot study encourage to proceed it further.
