POLYMORPHISM IN PHARMACEUTICALS
Dinesh Choudhury*
ABSTRACT
Polymorphism is the phenomenon in which a drug substance can exist in either two or more than two crystalline forms with different physicochemical properties. Obiquity and importance of Polymorphism occurring in pharmaceutical compounds are well recognized. It is very important and crucial to select the right polymorphic form from the beginning of drug discovery and drug development. While formulating a drug product, solubility, stability and bioavailability of API are the prominent factors. To manipulate this factors, study of study of polymorphism is essential which will give a knowledge on rapid absorption of BCS class-II, IV drugs in
systemic circulation. For this, it is important to characterize each form of the drug with suitable analytical techniques. This review will give an insight information about the different properties, preparation, stability and application of different polymorphic forms with some examples of classical drugs. This will help to acquire an overall knowledge about Polymorphism in Pharmaceuticals.
Keywords: Polymorph, Metastable, Stability, Enantiotropy, Monotropy, Chloramphenicol Palmitate, Oxytetracycline, Carbamazepine, Ritonavir.
