EVALUATION OF ANALGESIC AND ANTIINFLAMMATORY ACTIVITIES OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF WHOLE PLANT JUSTICIA BETONICA

ABSTRACT

The ethanolic extract of the whole plant of Justicia betonica is commonly used in India and srilankan traditional medicine for pain and inflammation. The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the ethanolic extract of whole plant of Justicia betonica for analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities using different models of pain and inflamation.The analgesic activity of Justicia betonica was carried out using Eddy’s hot plate method in rats and acetic acid induced writhing in mice.The anti-inflammatory activity was carried out using carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats and HRBC(human red blood cells) membrane stabilisaton assay[In-vitro test]. Tramadol and Diclofenac sodium were used as standard drugs for Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory activity respectively. From the results it was concluded that Justicia betonica posses significant Analgesic and Antiinflammatory activities.
