ABSTRACT
Ethyl acetate soluble fraction from total alcoholic extract of Bauhinia retusa pericarp of fully mature legume, on column chromatography afforded a new flavonolbioside characterized as quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl -(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside (retusabioside) together with, Quercetin- 3-O-α- arabinopyranoside (guaijaverin), quercitrin, quercetin, protocatechuic acid and gallic acid have been isolated for the first time. The structures of these compounds were established from extensive spectroscopic (UV, MS,1H and 13C-NMR) and chemical studies as well as comparison with literature data and /or authentic samples. HPLC analysis of the protein hydrol ysate indicated the presence of fifteen amino (37.83 g/100g and14.50 g/100g) in seeds and pericarp, respectively. Phenylalanine (3.96 g/100g and 1.77g/100g) was the major essential amino acid in seeds and pericarp, respectively. Furthermore, the total protein of seeds (24.38 g/100g) was determined. GLC analysis of seeds fatty acids revealed the presence of ten fatty acids with major unsaturated fatty acids as 37.15 % of which linolenic ( 28.94%) was the major one. GLC/MS analysis of the unsaponifiable matter of seeds revealed the presence of twenty eight compounds of which Gamma sitosterol (30.31 %) was the major compound .Moreover, the alcoholic extract of pericarp showed significant hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective effects of in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.
