Alaa Kamal Jabbar Alhamd*, Ali Abdul Rasool Hussein, Ismaail Nusif Jasim

ABSTRACT

Hyperglycemia is the main characteristic of diabetes mellitus which results from insufficient insulin secretion and hepatic gluconeogenesis. Diabetic patients often exhibit decreased immune response with increasing susceptibility to infection. Clinical evaluation of IgA levels in the serum of hyperglycemia patients in Al-Yarmook Teaching Hospital, Baghdad \ Iraq, among seventy participants, Thirty were healthy volunteers as a control group and forty as a hyperglycemia patients. To evaluate the possible relationship between immune response and hyperglycemia disease which was taken a control group of males volunteers, mean ages 49 ± 5 years with Cholesterol, Triglyceride and Glucose were 128 ± 8, 131 ± 10 and 98± 7 mg\dl respectively, and control group of females volunteers, mean ages 49 ± 6 years with Cholesterol, Triglyceride and Glucose were 121 ± 7, 127 ± 7 and 97± 18 mg\dl respectively. Hyperglycemia male patients, mean ages 52± 5 years with serum levels of Cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose were 197± 56, 210 ± 93 and 236 ± 46 mg\dl and female patients, mean ages 47 ± 6 years with Cholesterol, Triglyceride and Glucose were 188 ± 46, 197 ± 44 and 214 ± 33 mg\dl respectively using (Human Cesellschaft fur Biochemical und Diagnostic mbH, Germany) commercially kits. Immunoglobulin-A (IgA), was measured by using enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay "ELISA" (CUSABIO\ China) commercial kit. Mean serum IgA levels of male and female control groups were 98 ± 7 and 73 ± 16 mg/dl respectively while the mean serum IgA levels of male and female of hyperglycemia patients were 594 ± 171 and 504 ± 150 mg/dl respectively. The observed data were analyzed according to standard statistical method. Serum IgA levels did not clear significantly by grouping the patients according to ages variation and sex distribution. The IgA levels were increased with the increase clinical grades of hyperglycemia disease. The results were indicated that the higher levels of IgA might be due to protective mechanism against the weak immune response in hyperglycemia disease.
