ABSTRACT
Background: Asthma is chronic, inflammatory disease of the airways
affecting human beings worldwide. The aim of the present study was
to evaluate the effect of anti-asthmatic drugs on Penh associated with
the respiratory parameters using Barometric Whole-body
Plethysmography. Material & Methods: The hannover rats (n=8)
were divided into 6 groups for the study of Penh, Tidal & minute
volume, inspiratory and expiratory flow rate. Theophylline and
carbachol were administered orally and methacholine and clonidine in
aerosol form. Results and discussion: Individual’s respiratory
parameters showed statistically significant (p<0.001) results except
tidal volume. The Penh of carbachol and methacholine showed
statistical variations in respiration at different time intervals.
Conclusion:. Since there was movement of animals while doing these
studies so Penh could not be justified for their results. Some more data will be needed in
different conditions in future for the purpose of treating asthma.
Keywords: Asthma, Penh, Respiratory parameters, Whole-body plethysmography.
