THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF SARACA ASOCA: A REVIEW OF ITS MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Anjali Yadav, Purnima Shahi, Arundhati Singh*
ABSTRACT Saraca asoca (Roxb.) Willd., commonly known as Ashoka, is an important medicinal tree belonging to the family Fabaceae and has a prominent place in the traditional healthcare systems of India, particularly Ayurveda. The plant has been traditionally used for the management of various gynaecological and reproductive disorders, including excessive menstrual bleeding, menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea and uterine disorders. Different parts of S. asoca, especially the bark, flowers and seeds, contain a wide range of bioactive phytoconstituents, including flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, glycosides, steroids and other secondary metabolites. Pharmacological investigations have demonstrated several biological activities of the plant, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, antidiabetic, antiulcer, hepatoprotective and potential anticancer activities. The reported pharmacological properties may be associated with the synergistic effects of its diverse phytochemical constituents. Despite its extensive traditional use, further investigations are required to establish its molecular mechanisms, therapeutic efficacy, pharmacokinetic profile, standardized dosage and long-term safety through well-designed experimental and clinical studies. This review summarizes the botanical characteristics, traditional uses, phytochemical composition, pharmacological activities, medicinal importance and therapeutic potential of S. asoca, with particular emphasis on its applications in women's health and its prospects for evidence-based phytopharmaceutical development. Keywords: Saraca asoca; phytoconstituents; pharmacological activities; Antimicrobial Activity; Anticancer Potential; Cardioprotective Activity. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
