FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF MUCOADHESIVE BUCCAL TABLETS OF CARVEDILOL USING XANTHAN GUM AS A POLYMER
*Vaishali P. Argade and Yogesh R. Thombare
ABSTRACT The present study focused on the formulation of mucoadhesive buccal tablets of Carvedilol using xanthan gum as the mucoadhesive polymer, employing the direct compression technique. The powder blends were assessed for pre-compression parameters such as angle of repose, bulk density, tapped density, Carr’s index, and Hausner’s ratio. The resulting tablets were evaluated for various post-compression parameters including weight variation, thickness, hardness, friability, surface pH, swelling index, mucoadhesive strength, and in vitro drug release. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to characterize the tablets and confirmed the absence of any chemical interaction between the drug and excipients. Short-term stability studies demonstrated that the buccal tablets maintained their drug content and dissolution profile over time. All formulations followed zero-order drug release kinetics, with correlation coefficients (r values)ranging from 0.9827 to 0.9951. Analysis using Higuchi and Korsmeyer-Peppas models suggested that the drug release occurred through a non-Fickian diffusion mechanism. Keywords: Carvedilol, Buccal tablets, Xanthan Gum, Stability, FTIR. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
