FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF PERIWINKLE HAIR SERUM

ABSTRACT

Herbal hair serums are becoming an increasingly important area in cosmetic dermatology due to their bioactive components and low risk of side effects. This study details the formulation and assessment of a new hair serum that features Catharanthus roseus (Periwinkle) extract as its primary active ingredient, combined synergistically with caffeine, niacinamide, aloe vera gel, and glycerin. Catharanthus roseus, or Periwinkle, is known for being a rich source of vinca alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins, all of which have well-documented anti-inflammatory and hair growth-promoting properties. The serum was produced in a 15 ml batch using a cold-process gel-base method with xanthan gum as the thickener. The formulation underwent a thorough evaluation process that included organoleptic assessment, pH measurement, viscosity testing, spreadability analysis, stability studies, and skin safety evaluations. The results showed that the serum had a pH of 5.8 (falling within the acceptable scalp range of 4.5–6.5), a smooth and homogeneous consistency, a light herbal scent, and a non-greasy feel. Stability studies conducted over four weeks revealed no significant changes in appearance, pH, or consistency under accelerated conditions. The study finds that Catharanthus roseus extract can be effectively integrated into a serum base using pharmaceutical-grade excipients, resulting in a stable, visually appealing, and potentially effective hair care product. This formulation presents a promising herbal alternative to synthetic hair growth agents like minoxidil, which calls for further in vivo clinical trials.
