M.Suresh, K.Ravishankar and M.N. Palaksha*

ABSTRACT

The present study was an endeavor to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Ethanolic root extract of Eupatorium odoratum (Family: Asteraceae). The antioxidant activity of Eupatorium odoratum was carried out by three different established In-vitro methods DPPH, Nitric Oxide and Phosphomolybdenum assay. The ethanolic root extract (50,100,300,500 μg/ml) was compared with Gallic acid (1, 2.5, 5 μg/ml) as reference standard. The results obtained showed Ethanolic root extract of Eupatorium odoratum exhibited moderate inhibition of free radical scavenging activity DPPH, and Nitric oxide. In Phosphomolybdenum absorbance also exhibited moderate reducing of free radical scavenging activity. The results revealed that Ethanolic root extract of Eupatorium odoratum exhibited significant antioxidant activity. The presence of phytochemicals like alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids steroids, phenols, saponins, in the root extract to be observed in antioxidant activity.

Keywords: Eupatorium odoratum, DPPH, Nitric oxide, Phosphomolybdenum.
