Dr. Arun M.*, Dr. Savitha H. P., Dr. Vidya Maishale

ABSTRACT

Madatyaya (alcoholism) is a major socio-economic and healthproblem that affects not only individuals but also their familiesand society at large. It is a disorder caused by improper andexcessive consumption of alcohol over a prolonged period, which may lead to dependence and withdrawal symptoms. InAyurveda, Madatyaya is described as a Tridoshaja Vyadhiresulting from faulty intake of Madya, which vitiates Agni,Ojas, and Manas. According to classical texts, alcohol acts asnectar when consumed properly but behaves like poison whenmisused. The Ayurvedic management of Madatyaya primarilyincludes Shodhana (purificatory therapies), Shamana (palliativetreatment), Rasayana (rejuvenation therapy), and SatvavajayaChikitsa (psychotherapy). Several recent clinical studies haveexplored the role of Panchakarma procedures, internalmedications, and Medhya-Rasayana drugs in the managementof Madatyaya and withdrawal symptoms. This review attempts to compile and analyzeavailable classical references and recent research studies to highlight effective Ayurvedictreatment modalities in the management of Madatyaya.

Keywords: Madatyaya, Alcoholism, Panchakarma, Ayurveda, Recent treatment approaches.
