ABSTRACT

Sneha Kalpas manufactured in Ayurvedic pharmaceutics are usedextensively for medicinal as well as cosmetic purposes. It is one of thewidely used techniques in Ayurvedic drug industry to achievesolubility of both fat-soluble and water-soluble extractives into the oilmedium. Lipid-based drug delivery systems (LBDDS) are one of theemerging technologies designed to address the challenges of solubilityand bio-availability of poorly watersoluble ingredients. It is onlyKalpana which is used through all four modes of administration viz.,Pana, Abhyanga, Nasya and Basti. Quality and quantity of lipid solubleextract of medicinal ingredients varies, as per methods, types ofmaterial and ratio of material with reference to Sneha Dravya.Fat/Water soluble active principles of drugs are extracted intomedicated oil in Sneha Kalpana. Classically, these formulations havelonger shelf life in comparison to other Ayurvedic herbal medicationforms. Ayurveda, the Upaveda of Atharaveda, has emphasized on theprinciple of protecting the health in a healthy individual anderadicating the disease in the diseased. Living in good health throughout his life has been thedream of man right from day one of his existence on earth. But diseases have regularlydisturbed his dream, trying to conquer the healthy state of body, mind and spirit. Toovercome the disease, man has developed the art of medicine and science of healing.
