Abstract

A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF LODHRA (SYMPLOCOS RACEMOSA ROXB.) IN BRIHATTRAYI: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Background: Symplocos racemosa Roxb., commonly known as Lodhra, is a medicinal plant from the Symplocaceae family. Its historical significance dates back to the Vedic period, where it was used for its numerous therapeutic properties Materials and Methods: The study reviews historical and contemporary sources, including Ayurvedic classics (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtang Hridaya and Ashtang Samgrah) to gather data on the medicinal properties and uses of Symplocos racemosa. Results: Symplocos racemosa has been identified as effective in treating a wide range of health conditions, such as wound healing (Vranaropna), gynaecological disorders (Yonidoshhara) and antidiarrheal (Atisarahara) properties. It is also used to treat conditions like Prameha (diabetes), Raktapitta (bleeding disorders), Visarpa (infections), and Kustha (skin diseases). Discussion: In Ayurveda, it is widely referenced in classical texts like the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, where it is categorized under various medicinal groups. The plant's bioactive compounds are associated with its therapeutic potential in treating a variety of ailments, including gynaecological issues, diabetes, skin diseases, and bleeding disorders. Conclusion: This review highlights Lodhra's wide use in treating disorders like Atisara, Raktapitta, and Yoniroga in Brihattrayi.In many diseases it is used as single drugs preparation.
