Abstract

ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THANDULIYAKADI DECOCTION - AN AYURVEDA REMEDY FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD) IN CHILDREN

J. A. Nirosha* and IAM Leena

ABSTRACT

Back ground: Thanduliyakadi Decoction is polyherbal formulation. It is indicated for Pitthaja Unmada Chikitha in Sri Lankan Traditional Medical system mention on Deshiya Chikithsa Sangraha. Thanduliyakadi decoction included five ingredients such as Thandulieyaka (Amaranithus Viridis Linn), Lodra (Symplocos racemosa Roxb.), Kathak Beeja (Strychnus Potatarum) Bilwamula (Aegle marmilos), Vasa (Adhatoda Vasica). No quality control data available till date on the scientific Domaine. So, present study is aimed to evaluate the Thanduliyakadi Decoction through, physio-chemical parameters, heavy metals analysis, thin layer chromatography (TLC) fingerprinting and microbial analysis in the process of establishing QC data. Material and Method: Pre-authenticated raw drugs were procured, and Thanduliyakadi Decoction was prepared at the pharmacy, National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital in Borella. Organoleptic parameters, Heavy metals analysis, Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) of Thanduliyakadi Decoction were done at industrial of technical institute, Sri Lanka and physico chemical analysis and microbial analysis of Thanduliyakadi Decoction were done at botany laboratory in science faculty university of Columbo. Result: In pharmaceutical parameters, the pH value was 5.71, sugar concentration was 3.58 mg/ml, Titratable acidity value after sample diluted 10 times was 2.0 x 10-3 moldm-3, TLC values of the standard mixture of raw materials of Thanduliyakadi decoction at 254 nm and at 366 nm showed 14 and 12 spots, respectively and TLC values of sample of Thanduliyakadi decoction at 254 nm and at 366 nm showed 12 spots.in microbial analysis of Thanduliyakadi decoction no any contamination found up to 14 days. Conclusion: This study has generated preliminary data on physicochemical parameters, TLC, heavy metal analysis and microscopic analysis of Thanduliyakadi Decoction. This fingerprinting can be useful for future researchers to reproduce this formulation and to establish the QC parameter of Thanduliyakadi Decoction.

Keywords: Thanduliyakadi Decoction, Thin layer chromatography, physio-chemical parameter.
