ABSTRACT

The main aim of present study is to formulate a polyherbal toothpaste by using natural polymers such as carrageenan and chitosan gel base. Toothpaste plays the major part to maintain the oral hygiene. The natural ingredients add more therapeutic activity to the toothpaste that effectively enhance the oral hygiene. Herbal toothpastes are the formulation which is safer, lesser side effect, readily available and more therapeutic activity than compared to synthetic preparation. The current project has prepared one such herbal toothpaste with herbal ingredients each with its unique and significant role to safeguard maintain a healthy oral hygiene and also serves as medicinal agents to cure certain diseases. From the evaluation studies performed over the developed toothpaste formulation, it was found that all the formulations to be having good consistency along with good abrasiveness. Among all formulations F1 formulation with carrageenan gel base was found to be having good spreadablilty and good viscosity range, while othersmay be slightly spreadable. The formulated tooth gels may be safer compared to fully synthetic toothpastes and further studies are warranted to prove safety and efficacy of the formulated tooth gels.
