Dr. R. Sundhararajan*, Mohamed Riyaz S., Mohamed Salahudeen A. Mohamed Shafeek A., Mohamed Thamees T. and Mohammed Hamdhan S.A.
ABSTRACT This review highlights the marine biosphere as a primary source of valuable bioactive compounds. Natural substances derived from various types of algae, particularly brown algae, have attracted significant interest due to their diverse biological activities and compatibility with the human body. Among brown algae, Turbinaria ornata (T. ornata) is notably abundant and is recognized for its bioactive compounds, mainly polysaccharides and proteins, making it suitable for a variety of pharmaceutical uses. This study examines the biological activities of T. ornata, as reported in previous research, including its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antiproliferative, and neuroprotective properties. To analyze the phytochemical components of this edible seaweed, T. ornata was extracted using hexane, acetone, and methanol. The hexane extract contained alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, and quinones, while alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids were not present in the acetone and methanol extracts. This review provides comprehensive information about the potential use of these natural resources in pharmaceutical applications. Keywords: Brown algae, Pharmacological, Phytochemical, Turbinaria ornate. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
