A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF SYNONYMS AND PROPERTIES OF TALISHPATRA (ABIES SPECTABILIS (D.DON) MIRB.) FROM NIGHANTUS

ABSTRACT Background: Talishpatra known as Indian silver fir. Abies spectabilis (D.Don) Mirb. is the scientific name of the Talishpatra. It belongs to Pinaceae family. Pinaceae family is recognized as the pine family of conifers. It is one of the important Ayurvedic drug which is used since ages for treatment of various health ailments. Materials and Methods: All the available Ayurvedic Nighantus were referred for the collection of data regarding Talishpatra (Abies spectabilis (D.Don) Mirb.). There is description available on synonyms, properties and actions of the drugs. The e-Nighantu developed by National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH), Hyderabad was also referred for this review. Observations and Results: The various synonyms of Talishpatra, such as Patradhya, Dhatripatra, Talishpatraka, Sukodara, along with its properties like Tikta and Katu Rasa, and its therapeutic actions, including Ushna Virya, Katu Vipaka and Kaphavatahara effects, have been described across different Nighantus. Discussion: The collection of various information of the Talishpatra (Abies spectabilis (D.Don) Mirb.) from 24 Nighantus and compared its variations by their synonyms, properties, and actions. This type of critical analysis on drug Talishpatra (Abies spectabilis (D.Don) Mirb.) from various Ayurvedic Nighantu has been made for the first time. Conclusion: Present analysis shows that the different types of synonyms, property and actions described in various time period of Ayurvedic Nighantu can be used to identify and validate medicinal plants and well-established indications will be used as a basis for retrospective study of the specific drug.
