PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIMICROBIAL POTENTIALITY OF CRUDE EXTRACTS OF CRINUM LATIFOLIUM (LEAVES)
Namita Agrawal*, Dr. A. Vinay Chandra and Dr. Arvind Kumar Sharma
ABSTRACT Crinum latifolium is an ornamental and medicinal plant widely grows in various Indian regions and worldwide. Ayurveda describes that this plant having a significant medicinal importance. In present study, Plant leaves were extracted in double distilled water and methanol for qualitative phytochemical screening to investigate the presence of bioactive compounds and antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria (E.coli and Salmonella enterica), gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and fungi (Fusarium oxysporum & Candida albicans). Aqueous and methanolic, both extract gave the highest activity against gram positive bacteria Klebsiella pneumonia. Antifungal activity of Methanolic extract against Candida albicans (22.2±0.5) was also found effective.Aquous extract of crinum leaves found effectiveagainst Fusarium oxysporum with 22.5±0.7 mm of inhibition zone. Thus, further investigations are needed to explore the potentiality of plant leaf‟s extract could be used as safe medicine against the serious illness.
