Perla Swathi*, Keerthi, Vamsi, Rajyalakshmi, Saroja, Percy and M. Kishore Babu
ABSTRACT Coumarin, a naturally occurring aromatic organic compound with a distinctive sweet odor, is found in various plants, such as Cinnamon zeylancium. As a member of the benzopyrone class, it has diverse applications in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries." Over the years, various synthetic methodologies have been developed to access this valuable heterocycle. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the synthetic methods employed for coumarin production, with a focus on the Perkin reaction, Knoevenagel condensation reaction, Duff reaction and Pechmann reactions. In this coumarin synthesis different solvents used. The influence of different solvents, including methanol, acetone, and hexane, on the reaction yield and product distribution is discussed. It exhibited a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antimicrobial properties. The different biological activities of coumarin and its derivatives are also highlighted, underscoring their potential applications in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the synthesis of coumarin, highlighting the key strategies, catalysts, and reaction conditions employed. The scope, limitations, and potential applications of each method are discussed, with a focus on green chemistry principles and sustainability. This review article focuses on the period from 2003 to 2023. Keywords: . [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
