ABSTRACT
Background: Ashwagandha Kshara is indicated for management of Shwasa including Tamaka Shwasa. So, for initialization of standardization and assurance of the quality of herbal compounds, pharmacognostical and pharmaceutical analysis should be done. Methods: Ashwagandha Kshara was subjected to microscopic evaluation for pharmacognostical and physiochemical analysis like loss on drying percentage, pH value, Ash value, Acid insoluble ash, Water soluble ash, Sodium value & potassium value. Results: Pharmacognostical study showed the presence of certain identifying characters of the ingredient of Ashwagandha Kshara i. e. Ashwagandha. In pharmaceutical study, preliminary physiochemical analysis showed that loss on drying percentage 8.68%w/w, pH value 10, Ash value 95.30%, Acid insoluble ash 0.94, Water soluble ash 96.72%, Sodium value 9.6%, and potassium value 4.9%. Conclusions: Pharmacognostical and physico-chemical observations revealed the specific characteristics of active constituent of Ashwagandha Kshara and confirmed the purity and genuinity of the drug.
