ABSTRACT

This experimental work was designed to investigate the anti-emetic effects of ethanolic crude extract of Prunus domestica dry fruit at 300 and 500mg/kg dose in day old young male chicks. The results of anti-emetic activity indicated that P. domestica possesses strong antiemetic effects in dose dependent manner. The test drug at 500mg/kg body weight exhibited more potent and almost similar antiemetic activity 61% and 34.5 mean numbers of retches (p<0.0001) to standard drug motillium (0.15mg/kg body weight) that showed (62.4%) antiemetic activity and 33.3 mean numbers of retches (p<0.0001). P. domestic at 300mg/kg body weight showed 34.58% emesis inhibition and 58 mean numbers of retches (p<0.0001) while the mean number of retches in control group was 88.66. Previously reported phytochemical analysis of P. domestica showed the presence of certain phytochemical constituents in test drug that are responsible for anti-emetic activity. Therefore the results are justified.

Keywords: P. domestica, Anti-emetic activity, Male chicks.
