REVIEW ON NEED OF TODAY: SUPERDISINTEGRANTS – NATURAL V/S SYNTHETIC

ABSTRACT

Superdisintegrants are substances or mixture that are added in formulations to increase the dispersion or breaking of tablets into smaller particles for fast dissolution. Fast dissolving, chewable, fast melting and orally disintegrating or dissolving tablets are solid dosage forms that disintegrate quickly and dissolve in the mouth without water. These products are always in demand because of their immediate therapeutic results, which increases compliance among users. The main challenge with orally disintegrating tablets is to develop tablet formulations with faster disintegration rate. The tablet disintegration depends upon various physical factors of superdisintegrants such as percentage and proportion of disintegrants used, presence of surfactants and hardness of the tablets, also its compatibility with other excipients and nature of drug substances. This review explains the need of use of natural excipients other than synthetic excipients such as natural superdisintegrants in the formulation.
