ABSTRACT

Siddha medicine is one of the most ancient medical systems of India. Siddha is the mother medicine of ancient Tamils/Dravidians of peninsular South India. This system has enormous pharmacopoeia containing vegetable, animal and mineral products. Although the Siddha Herbo-mineral preparations represent a rich source of antimicrobial agents. The selected Siddha Herbo-mineral preparations were tested for antibacterial activities. Three strains of bacteria viz. E. coli, S. aureus, and K. pneumonia were used for antimicrobial assay, four concentrations of the Padigara Parpam- 4000 μg, 2000 μg, 1000 μg, 500 μg and and 250 μg were used and the growth of all the bacteria were well inhibited by the Siddha drugs. The disc diffusion assay indicated a dose dependent effect of the Siddha drugs to inhibit the growth of bacteria. From this study, it was observed that the Herbo – mineral Drugs such as Padigara Parpam is a Siddha formulation found to have antibacterial activity. So it is concluded that Siddha preparation can be used to control or prevent the antibacterial infections. Further elaborate studies are necessary to standardize and bring out high quality herbal products owing to their complex nature.
