Abstract

REVIEW ON CHEMISTRY AND THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITY OF THE DERIVATIVES OF THIOPHENE – THE SULPHUR CONTAINING HETEROCYCLE

Dakme Papi, Ratna Choudhury, Biplab De and Ashmita Saha*

ABSTRACT

The heterocyclic compounds being largest divisions in organic chemistry have wide range of biological and industrial significance. The sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and selenium containing heterocyclic compounds have great significance in historical development of organic synthesis. There are large number of heterocyclic bioactive compounds available in nature. Synthetic heterocycles have wide range of application as medicine like broad spectrum antimicrobial, antileishmanial, genotoxic, CNS active agents (both centrally and peripherally), fungicides, herbicides, antioxidant.[1] The fundamental process of life involving numerous biochemical reactions like energy generation and utilization, nerve impulses, sight, metabolism and hereditary information are also based on the participation of many heterocyclic compounds. These are vitamins, enzymes, coenzymes, nucleic acids, ATP and serotonin. They are also key components of nucleic acid molecules that control protein synthesis and the sequence of amino acids.[2]
