ABSTRACT

Gingival enlargements are common clinical entities in routine dental practice. Since gingival enlargements have versatile clinical presentations, coming up to a final diagnosis becomes challenging for the clinician. They can be categorized on the basis of their etiopathogenesis, location, size, extent, etc. Based on the existing knowledge and clinical experience of the operating dental surgeon, a differential diagnosis can be made. Furthermore, in some cases where gingival enlargement could be the primary sign of potentially lethal systemic diseases, a correct diagnosis of these enlargements could prove life saving for the patient and improve the quality of life. In this review, we attempt to identify the various risk factors associated with different types of gingival overgrowths and their management to restore both functional harmony and aesthetics. By regular upgradation of knowledge about common and rare presentations of gingival enlargement, one can make a wise decision about final diagnosis and treatment plan. Still, there can be certain clinical presentations of the disease, which may appear different from the available knowledge, and descriptions of gingival overgrowth.
