ABSTRACT
The epidemiology study on diabetes mellitus (type-I &type-II) was
carried out in Warangal District, Andhra Pradesh State of India
amongst 2395 patients (1632 males and 763 females) of all ages
between 0-90 years, period of 3 years 2007, 2008, and 2009. Informed
consent was obtained from the patients after the objectives of the study
had been explained carefully to them. Every patient was examined
clinically for signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus and diagnosed
the blood glucose levels and in addition, a pre-tested questionnaire was
given on each patient to identify their nutritional & other habits. The
results were shown that out of 2395 patients examined, 1925 (80.37%)
were positive for type II diabetes mellitus, among them 1344 (males),
581(females) and 470(19.62%) were positive for type-I diabetes
mellitus, among them 288 (males), 182 (females). The distribution of
diabetes mellitus by types and gender showed that type-II (80.37%)
had the highest prevalence, than type-I (19.62%) and followed the males than females. The
prevalence of diabetes mellitus increased with increase in age of patients with the 35 – 55
year group 1715 (71.60%) being the most affected while those patients aged 55 years and
above. The concomitant prevalence of diabetes mellitus with other diseases715 (37.14%) like
hypertension 367(51.32%), diabetic ketoacidosis 199 (27.83%), diabetic foot ulcers149
(20.83%). The result further reveals that cardiovascular diseases rate was significantly higher
in diabetes mellitus than in non diabetes mellitus.
