ABSTRACT

Encephalitis is a disease with very high mortality and morbidity. The mortality rate can rise up to 40% depending upon various factors of the locality. Poor prognosis increasing the disease burden. Confirming the etiology of causative agents could help to prepare control strategies. Our study tries to find out the etiology and epidemiology in the locality. Blood samples and CSF samples were collected and tested to find out the cause at the District Public Health Laboratory (DPHL). The test results showed 8.49% positive for Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), followed by leptospirosis 5.88% (9/153), scrub typhus 2.61% (4/153), dengue 1.96% (3/153), herpes 0.65% (1/153), typhoid 0.65% (1/153), etc. Males were more affected, and the above 31 years age group, i.e., the oldest age group, was affected the highest or at highrisk, followed by the below 5 years age group. To control the disease burden, confirming the case is very important. More causative agents tests can minimize the unknown etiology.

Keywords: DPHL, JEV, dengue, Leptospirosis, scrub typhus.
