A DETAILED REVIEW ON DYPSIS LUTESCENS (ARECACEAE)

ABSTRACT

Arecaceae is a botanical family of palm trees with currently 181 genera and 2600 species restricted to tropical and subtropical countries and palms are among the best known and extensively cultivated plant families. Palms are mostly used in landscaping and they also possess phytocompounds like saponins, terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids and are used in preparation of coconut products, wax industry, palm oils and also used medicinally for treatment of respiratory problems, prostate enlargement, etc. Some of the plant species belonging to this family are Areca catechu, Cocos nucifera, Sabal palmetta, Borassus flabellifer. Dypsis lutescens is one such species of Arecaceae family which is also known as golden cane palm, areca palm, yellow palm, butterfly palm, native to Madagascar and South India and naturalized in the Andaman Islands and is used widely as ornamental plant along with few evidences for certain medicinal properties.
