Abstract

ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF 5,10,15,20-TETRAKIS (4-METHOXYPHENYL)-21H, 23H-PORPHINE COBALT (II) AND PORPHINE-5,10,15,20-TETRAYL) TETRAKIS (BENZOIC ACID), SINGLY AND IN COMBINATION

ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial activity of two porphyrins (1) and (2) were investigated using the Disc Diffusion Assay. The largest AZOI of 247.32 mm2 was induced by sample (1) at a concentration of 0.1g/10ml, whereas the lowest non-zero AZOI of 23.0/22.98 mm2 was induced by compound (2) at a concentration of 0.01g/10ml and 0.05g/10ml against C. albicans. Zero AZOI wasn’t induced by any compound against any pathogenic microorganism. For sample (1), against all pathogens, there seems to be an increase in the AZOI, as the compound concentration increases from 0.01 to 0.1g/10ml. For sample (2), there was an increase in AZOI, as the concentration of the sample increases against all pathogens, with the exception against K. pneumonia and S. aureus. For combined sample, supramolecule (3) there was also an increase in AZOI, except against K. pneumoniae. Sample 1, seems to be selective for C. albicans, whereas sample (3) seem to be selective also for C. albicans also. There was little antimicrobial selectivity for compound (2).
