ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of aqueous unripe fruit extract of Musa balbisiana in the treatment of gastric ulcers. When severe stress is induced, the gastric mucosa of the experimental animals damaged due to the action of free radicals. Unripe fruit extract of Musa balbisiana have antioxidant potential due the presence of flavonoids (leucocyanidin), vitamins, phenolic compounds, triterpinoids etc. The dried powder of unripe fruits of Musa balbisiana was extracted with water by maceration for seven days and phytochemical analysis showed the Presence of alkaloids, flavanoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, saponins, carbohydrates, proteins, aminoacids, vitamin C, starch, pectin and tryptophan. Anti-ulcer potential of extract was evaluated by stress induced cold water immersion model. Wistar albino rats were divided
into 5 groups and administered with vehicle, ulcer control, Omeprazole (20 mg/kg) and fruit extract at various concentrations 250 and 500 mg/kg once daily for 21 successive days. On end of 21st day the animals were evaluated for anti-ulcer activity by cold water immersion for 3 hours, then sacrificed, gastric juice, pH, free and total acidity, ulcer index and percentage ulcer protection were determined. Musa balbisiana extract administered in dose of 500 mg/kg orally caused a decrease in ulcer index. It showed 73.15% ulcer protection compared to ulcer control group, which was comparable to the standard drug Omeprazole. So, the aqueous extract of unripe fruits of Musa balbisiana were effective in healing of gastric ulcers induced by cold water immersion method.
