Abstract

RAPID BIOSYNTHESIS OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES USING LEAF EXTRACT OF BRASSICA OLERACEA VAR. GONGYLODES AND THEIR ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY AGAINST BACTERIA

Subhankar Das, Mohan Chandra Kalita and Susmita Shukla*

ABSTRACT

In this present study silver nanoparticles have been synthesized using
aqueous leaf extract of Brassica oleracea Var G. under the influence of
direct sunlight. The stable silver nanoparticles have been synthesized
using 90 ml of 10-3 M silver nitrate and was mixed with 10 ml of
aqueous leaf extract of Brassica oleracea Var G., the reaction mixture
was exposed to direct sunlight. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles
were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction
analysis (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
The UV-Vis showed a broad peak at 435 nm. Furthermore, the XRD
analysis revealed the crystalline nature of the synthesized silver
nanoparticles. Also, the biosynthesized silver nanoparticles were tested
against Staphylococcus auerus (MTCC 97) and Escherichia coli
(MTCC 111) to evaluate their antibacterial activity using disc diffusion
method. The synthesized silver nanoparticles showed promising antibacterial activity against
both the bacterial strains. The present study shows the synthesis of stable silver nanoparticles
using aqueous leaf extract of Brassica oleracea Var G. in an eco-friendly and cost effective
way. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles could be utilize in the field of nanomedicine and
in various other applications.

Keywords: Brassica oleracea Var G., Staphylococcus auerus, Escherichia coli.
