Abstract

TRANSFUSION SUPPORT IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING AUTOLOGOUS HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELLS: LITERATURE REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is often the only cure for a patient. There are several obstacles that they face during the whole process of seeking a donor: the remission of the disease to enable the procedure, the neutropenia resulting from the conditioning, in addition to all post-transplant complications. The transfusion of blood and blood components is a relevant technology, one of the most important interventions in medicine; although blood transfusion is a complex and invasive procedure and can present many risks to the patient. In order to request a procedure, it is necessary to evaluate the patient's laboratory tests, showing the value of hemoglobin, platelets, RNI, fibrinogen, among others, although the clinical diagnosis is important. The present study aimed to verify if post-transplant recipients of stem cells have the need for transfusion of blood components, based on an updated bibliographic review through the exploratory research with a qualitative approach in periodicals, scientific articles, in the database Bireme, Lilac and Scielo. Transfusion of blood is not always the first alternative, as there may be transfusion reactions in some cases if synthetic alternatives are used. The study suggests that transfusion support is part of the clinical development of any patient, since transfusion is necessary even if the patient is not transplanted, suggesting that this type of support can stabilize a serious clinical picture, since the hemoglobin deficit can lead to a lack of oxygenation in the blood, among other causes.

Keywords: Transfusion, blood components, autologous transplantation, stem cells.
