Abstract

EVALUATION OF INVITRO ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITY OF VARIOUS EXTRACTS OF EUPHORBIA CYATHOPHORA (WHOLE PLANT)

ABSTRACT

Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycaemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The objective of this study is to evaluate the invitro anti-diabetic activity of whole plant extracts of Euphorbia cyathophora. The plant material was extracted by hot continuous soxhlet extraction with Petroleum ether, Ethylacetate and Ethanol (99.9% v/v). The above obtained extracts were evaluated for phytochemical analysis and invitro antidiabetic activity by haemoglobin glycosylation assay. On phytochemical analysis, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts (whole plant) of Euphorbia cyathophora reveals the presence of secondary metabolites like flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, terpenoids, carbohydrates, proteins, saponins, and sterols. In-vitro haemoglobin glycosylation assay of Euphorbia cyathophora extract was evaluated. An increase in the glycosylation was observed on incubation of haemoglobin with the increasing concentration of the glucose (2mg, 10mg and 20mg) over a period of 72hrs. It concludes that, the presence of these phytochemicals in high concentration accounts for the significant hypoglycaemic effect of Euphorbia cyathophora. The ethanolic extract showed highest inhibition against haemoglobin glycosylation.
