IMPROPER PRACTICE OF DHYAANAM (MEDITATION) LEADS TO PSYCHOSIS - CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT
In Siddha system, yogam begins with the basic attainment of purity in mind and action. Siddhars have defined yogam as an art which controls the mind by preventing it from distracting through sense and sense organs and unite it with the divinity after realizing the true entity of external bliss. Siddha system has numerous literatures to explore the yogam, its benefits and detriments. Dhyaanam (meditation) which is a part of it, plays a role here. The study analysed the correlation between contemplation and psychosis of three cases presenting with psychotic symptoms consequent to improper practice of Dhyaanam (Meditation).
Improper practice of Dhyaanam (meditation) affects the Avathaigal, specially the 4th stage of Avathai Thuriyam (dreamless state). Siddha text portrays, that impairment in Thuriyam (dreamless state) stage leads to psychosis. In this study, we will discuss about the correlation between Dhyaanam (Meditation) and psychosis.
