Abstract

TARGETED DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM: AN OVERVIEW

ABSTRACT

Targeted drug delivery is an advanced method of delivering drugs to the patients in such targeted sequences that increases the concentration of the delivered drug to the targeted body part of interest only which in turn improves efficacy of treatment by reducing side effects of drugs administration. The brain is a delicate organ, and nature has very efficiently protected it. The drug accessibility to the central nervous system is limited by the blood brain barrier(BBB).Various brain disorder are Parkinson, Alzheimer, Meningitis, Brain abscess, Epilepsy, Multiple sclerosis etc. The management of brain related diseases with the present available therapeutic system is very difficult, as insuffient amount of drug reaches to the brain, due to the highly lipophilic nature of blood-brain barrier (BBB). Drug delivery to the brain requires advances in drug delivery technologies. Due to the presence of blood brain barrier only small lipid soluble drug in the circulation are delivered to the brain cells. The most distressing fact about delivery of drug to the CNS is the presence of BBB that have a tendency to impair the drug distribution. The net amount of delivered drug (medicinal agent) and its capability to gain access to the pertinent target sites are the main considering points for CNS drug development. Therefore, practical strategies are required for mediating the drug transport across blood brain barrier. The goal of a targeted drug delivery system is to prolong, localize, target and have a protected drug interaction with diseased tissue.
