Abstract

ROLE OF PURPLE NON-SULFUR BACTERIA RHODOPSEUDOMONAS PALUSTRIS RSOU000 AND RHODOPSEUDOMONAS THERMOTOLERANCE RSOU555 IN WASTE WATER TREATMENT

ABSTRACT

An attempt has been made to examine the ability of Purple Non-Sulfur Bacteria (PNSB) in waste water treatment. The application of PNSB for waste water treatment is one of the attractive methods since the microbes are widely available in nature and capable of removing organic substances even under high organic load. Two PNSB strains Rps.palustris RSOU000 and Rps. thermotolerance RSOU555 isolated from soil sample collected from elevated CO2 chambers erected for climate change study at CRIDA (Central Research for Dry land Agriculture) and from water sample collected from Pulicat lake, were used in the treatment of Saroornagar lake waters. Inoculation of these bacteria to waste water resulted in the decrease of pollutants. There is reduction of 50% of COD, 40% of BOD and 52.28% of TDS with Rps. palustris RSOU000 and 68.18% COD, 56.66% BOD and 54.09% TDS, with Rps. thermotolerance RSOU555. The decrease in BOD, COD and TDS was significant. However, the degree of decrease in the above parameters varied with the PNSB involved in the treatment.
