Abstract

A STUDY OF MICROBIAL DIVERSITY FOR BACTERIOCIN PRODUCTION FROM NGARI FISH AND NOBLE SYNTHESIS OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES AND ITS ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES

ABSTRACT

Ngari is a traditional fermented fish product of North-East India. In Ngari, Lactic acid bacteria were identified as Lactococcus lactis, Lactococcus plantarum, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus fructosus, Lactobacillus amylophilus, Lactobacillus coryniformis subsp. torquens and Lactobacillus plantarum. Endospore-forming rods were identified as Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus pumilus. Most strains of LAB had a high degree of hydrophobicity, indicating their „probiotic‟ characters. In the present study the probiotics properties of Lactobacillus, Enterococcus sp and LAB., isolated from Ngari by serial dilution and grown under MRS medium which was used as bacteriocin producing strains and synthesis of silver nanoparticles and its antimicrobial activities against the test microorganisms. Bacteriocins are produced by some strains of LAB; they are antimicrobial peptides with activity against closely related to the producer micro-organism. Alternatively in this study the low cost fermented fish Ngari which is very rich with microbial flora was used as the raw material for bacteriocin production and synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The most common used of bacteriocin is a natural food preservative or as a probiotic agents with interesting outputs. But the exploitation of bacteriocin was not completed yet. Lactic acid bacteria are also of economic importance in the preservation of agricultural crops and in the biodegradation. In present situation, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are in great use in the medicinal, pharmaceutical, agricultural industry and in water purification.
